Where There's Woke

However bad you think the Freedom250 nonsense is, it's worse. It's actually straight up crazy how much grift and ineptitude there is. And Vanilla Ice.

0:00:03 Clip: What's so scary about the woke mob? How often you just don't see them coming. Anywhere you see diversity, equity, and inclusion, you see Marxism and you see woke principles being pushed. Wokeness is a virus more dangerous than any pandemic hands down. The woke monster is here and it's coming for everything.

0:00:33 Clip: Instead of go-go boots, the seductress green M&M will now wear sneakers.

0:00:41 Thomas: Hello and welcome to Where There's Woke. I'm Thomas Dowd over there. Is Lydia, how you doing?

0:00:45 Lydia: Hello. I, man, that's always a loaded question for me around July 4th because I'm like not a patriotic person, but I feel like I can't say that I'm not a patriotic. I don't know. I feel people will judge me out in public. Yeah. Yeah, here's the safe space. So I'm doing okay, except it's July 4, which is an annoying holiday, especially as a vegetarian.

0:00:56 Thomas: Why? Oh, you mean like out in public? I was going to say, no one here cares. Gotcha. Okay.

0:01:07 Lydia: So there's like, yeah, it's coming up. It's coming. It's looming in the distance in the short distance. But yeah, I realized that I was like, if I was still eating meat, it would like be fine. But because I'm vegetarian, yeah, literally nothing. No, I hate it.

0:01:07 Thomas: Yeah. Well, it's July 2nd today, but yeah.

0:01:16 Thomas: Yeah, July 4th has nothing for us. Nothing for us, could not care less.

0:01:24 Lydia: I don't like fireworks. I do not care about them at all.

0:01:27 Thomas: So even though it's an extremely special, important 4th of July?

0:01:31 Lydia: Yeah, it is actually. It is the semi-quincentennial because it is 250 years. It feels like why are we doing this to begin with? I have a lot of stuff we're going to talk about, about like why we're here. But obviously people I'm sure have seen some of the nonsense that has been happening related to America's 250th birthday and the way that the Trump administration is trying to celebrate it during this season.

0:01:58 Thomas: I mean, nothing wrong with celebrating if I cared about America and or the government. Yeah.

0:02:02 Lydia: If it was a country to care about. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Pretty much. But I thought it'd be fun to kind of go through it today and laugh at the other side of it. That's my birthday present to this country.

0:02:11 Thomas: So what's going on? Is it a disaster? I mean we got all kinds of stuff. I keep seeing they had some sort of concerts that didn't happen or...

0:02:15 Lydia: Oh, my God. It's beyond that. This gives everything. Okay, you guys, this gives disaster. This gives, why?

0:02:26 Thomas: Geez, are you using Gen Z slang right now? Oh man.

0:02:30 Lydia: Incompetence. Stay out of my mind and my mouth. We're going to get from this. Now I'm all self -conscious.

0:02:34 Thomas: I'm having to listen to it. That's fine I just was making sure oh god oh no god he's so tacky it's like the the

0:02:46 Lydia: Potentially corruption. We get some Jan 6 throwback stuff This has everything as part of this story. And I'm so excited to share with you all how terrible this entire celebration is. So the Great American State Fair is officially open. We're going to talk a lot about that in the main show. But just very, very quickly, the New Republic described the fair as, quote, flimsy, fake, two -dimensional columns that look like something Wile E. Coyote would run into while chasing the Roadrunner. It's so bad no

0:03:21 Thomas: Combination of trump being so tacky and then also obviously the incompetence of corruption it's not gonna be good it's NOT gonna be good yeah

0:03:29 Lydia: On any metric yeah I mean it'd be one thing if like okay it was like really well put together but still really tacky and like gaudy and stuff but he can't do either thing right it's crazy

0:03:33 Thomas: Man well I'm excited if you want to support the show patreon .com where there's woke and get early stuff and get bonuses and skip the ads dads uh we'll take our quick break and then we will dig into america's birthday all right I'm in my birthday suit I'm in america'S BIRTHDAY

0:03:59 Ad: [Ad break 1 — ad music]

0:04:00 Lydia: Yes oh boy before we get into all of like the fun stuff about making fun of what in the world is happening with this stuff, I think we need to spend some time talking about, I know,

0:04:05 Thomas: SUIT ah you're gonna make me do homework I thought we could have a nice

0:04:16 Lydia: We're going to have a nice thing. But first, I want us to understand how concerning some of this background stuff is, because like everything that's getting airtime is related to the concert probably everyone's heard about or crowd size or some of the exhibits or Confederate flags that have been popping up at the State Fair, like things like that, that kind of grab your attention. Not a lot of time and attention has been paid to the entire, like, infrastructure behind the scenes, right? So there's actually two organizations that are involved with celebrating the 250th birthday of America. America 250 was congressionally established in 2016. It's a bipartisan commission established

0:04:19 Thomas: Thing hmm yeah right

0:04:57 Lydia: Under Obama, created specifically so that the anniversary could be planned across multiple administrations, right, not just whoever was in power. Yeah. And that it would span various departments. And let me just read to you what the makeup of this commission is. It includes 16 private citizens, four U .S. representatives, four US senators, and 12 ex officio members representing all three branches of the federal government and its independent agencies. The chair of the commission is former treasurer of the United States, Rosie Rios. She's worked through five presidential administrations. They are focused on being nonpartisan because celebrating Celebrating America shouldn't

0:05:04 Thomas: So liberal bullshit yeah shouldn't have been yeah

0:05:36 Lydia: Be a partisan thing, right? It should be like one of the most unifying things of all time, really. So that's how that program was set up. And quickly from the law that established this commission.

0:05:47 Thomas: Also it was a law more than just

0:05:49 Lydia: Yeah, yeah, this was an act of Congress. Mm hmm. Yep. Yeah. Passed back in 2016, July 22nd, 2016 is when this went into effect. Outlining the meetings that they would do, the duties that they would be responsible for, how they, yeah. Yeah, exactly. The chili cook -off, you know, how things would be coordinated, and then the involvement of various agencies within the federal government. So, for example, the Department of Interior, the secretary shall undertake a study of appropriate actions that might be taken to further preserve and develop historic sites and battlefields at such time and in such manner as will ensure that fitting observances and exhibits may be held at appropriate sites and battlefields during the celebration. Under arts and humanities, the presiding officer of the the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities, the chairperson of the National Endowment for the Arts, chairperson of the national endowment for the humanities shall cooperate with the commission, especially in the encouragement and coordination of scholarly works and artistic expressions, focusing on the history, culture, and political thought of the period predating the United States semi -quincentennial library of Congress, Smithsonian, the department of state.

0:05:49 Thomas: A executive action okay like who's bringing what like cookies cupcakes allergy safe yeah

0:06:53 Lydia: And I'm spending time to describe how comprehensive and thoughtful the creation of this was, because obviously we are going to see the exact opposite. So when Trump comes into power, January 2025, one of his first executive orders was to create Freedom 250.

0:07:10 Thomas: Oh good because yeah it didn't have any freedom that's what they forgot stupid obama

0:07:16 Lydia: Exactly. So this was issued January 29th, 2025, and it establishes the White House task force on celebrating America's 250th birthday. The president shall be the chair of Task Force 250 and the vice president will serve as vice chair. The chair will appoint an executive director who shall administer and execute the day -to -day operations of Task Force 250 and who shall report through the assistant, yada, yadda, yedda.

0:07:26 Thomas: Idiot hmm so that's interesting does that like conflict with the law like are there two.

0:07:46 Lydia: Yes, there are two entities. And so there are some things across the United States that are sponsored by America 250, the congressional committee. And there are Some things that are being put on by Freedom 250. Now, the White House instructed all staff involved with this stuff to change their email signatures to cite Freedom 250,

0:08:07 Thomas: I bet that's like against the law though.

0:08:10 Lydia: I don't know if it is. I don't know that they expected anything like this, honestly. Like we're talking about 2016.

0:08:15 Thomas: I'm joking, but also I know they don't care but anything that was created as part of that legislation. I don't you know, like I don'T know that did the legislation give the president like a role that he's using to do this. Maybe. Oh. I DON'T KNOW. Yeah.

0:08:27 Lydia: It's just that it established a commission. The commission still exists and they're still putting things on. It's just that there are certain activities under their purview and certain things that President Trump decided he wanted to do that are not part of what America 250 was envisioning to celebrate America.

0:08:42 Thomas: Maybe I misunderstood. I thought you were saying he kind of took him over and like had him change their thing.

0:08:46 Lydia: No, he created a second group.

0:08:48 Thomas: Oh yeah. No, I got that. Okay. Okay, Okay. So he's got a competing group. This is like two kids are throwing parties and they're like seeing who's going to go to what, you know, they're both fighting for the cool kids,

0:08:52 Lydia: It's a competing group. Yep. Yeah. So the Freedom 250 group is obviously it's Trump and J .D. Vance. It is also the secretary of state, secretary of treasury, defense, interior, agriculture. It literally just his cabinet. And again, remember the director of speech writing. Okay. Then they do include the chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities and the chair for the National endowment for arts and any other executive departments that they want to include.

0:09:01 Thomas: You know, losers. Yeah.

0:09:23 Lydia: It's just it's so ridiculous. So they specifically in the executive order called out a couple of different things. They also said that for administrative purposes, it was going to be housed in the Department of Defense. So, they were going to oversee the funding allocation and stuff. It would kind of filter through defense. Yeah, very bizarre. Are. The things that they knew they wanted to do when they first did this executive order was the National Garden of American Heroes and creating that, I guess, protecting America's monuments from vandalism. That was another thing that they were concerned about with this executive order. Those are the two things that we're looking at with that executive order and knowing that they're going to plan a big old birthday bash, whatever it might be. America 250, on their FAQ, they have a little section. How is America 250 different from other 250th anniversary anniversary organizations without, you

0:09:39 Thomas: It's for party security. Just the Confederate ones. Yeah, yeah. Others.

0:10:14 Lydia: Know, calling it out. Yeah. America 250 is the only nonpartisan organization charged by Congress to lead the national celebration and commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Its work is guided by a bipartisan commission driven by purpose to serve the interests of all Americans as mandated by its legislation and links to the legislation.

0:10:35 Lydia: Yeah, and the things that they've done, the programs that they have led are some really cool stuff. So they had America's Field Trip, which was student entries asking students what does America mean to you and they had to submit writing or original artwork and it's a contest so they're going to award a field trip experience or a cash prize depending on I guess what they decide they haven't announced it yet to 250 of those students and they've had 20 ,000 submissions they are also leading like volunteer service efforts through a program called America Gives they said more than 10 million service hours have have been recorded through that program. They've distributed 73 ,000 flags through a sub -program, America Waves. Yeah.

0:11:17 Thomas: All right. We've got enough flags. America waves.

0:11:21 Lydia: Yeah, I know. And then they've also been really present in cultural and sports moments nationwide, they say, including Times Square on New Year's Eve, the Rose Parade, events tied to the NFL, NBA, MLB, and that they are also executing a series of celebratory events uh

0:11:39 Thomas: When he said that, I was like, like oh great another acronym like they the straights have their acronym nfl mlb lgbt I don't even know what they are national something lee who knows associations impossible I can't keep up they keep adding

0:11:45 Lydia: Uh-huh yeah exactly yeah so because the america 250 was established by congress there's legislation established with it you know that it would need funding to carry out its duties it is concerning because by the end of 2025 10 million dollars that was supposed to go to america250 had been redirected to freedom 250 by april 2026 freedom 250 had received 68 .3 million from the Department of the Interior. It is concerning enough because Adam Schiff had to, he drafted a letter saying, hey, this is getting really problematic because we can't account for the money that was supposed to go to America 250. Has it been moving to Freedom 250? Freedom 250 was set up as a public -private partnership.

0:11:54 Thomas: Letters oh wow huh

0:12:41 Lydia: So we have also corporate sponsors involved here.

0:12:43 Thomas: Absolutely america's birthday brought to you by exxon mobile of course or something some

0:12:49 Lydia: Yep. But it's not just that. It's not just corporate sponsors. They have an entire fundraising brochure that they issued.

0:12:54 Thomas: Shit they're actually incorporating america just to celebrate they're like america incorporated

0:12:58 Lydia: It lists their various sponsorship packages. So they have the red, white, and blue sponsor, which is the $500 ,000 to under a million dollars. And it grants you VIP access, invitations, and preferred seating at all Freedom 250 events. Yep.

0:13:04 Thomas: Yeah ultra freedom pack the free Patriot. Oh, wow. I bet that's going to be so priceless, essentially. Because otherwise, how are you going to get in? I mean, it's a hot ticket.

0:13:21 Lydia: A Patriot sponsor, which ranges from a million to just under two and a half million dollars, That's also VIP access, of course. There's a media partnership that you get to get a package press release in conjunction with the Freedom 250's communications team.

0:13:35 Thomas: If I sign up for the Patriot package, I better be getting all the benefits described to me from the red, white, and blue package.

0:13:41 Lydia: Yeah, exactly. And then also being acknowledged during the events to the crowd.

0:13:48 Thomas: This is so tacky.

0:13:50 Lydia: It is very tacky.

0:13:50 Thomas: Look, if you have to do the things we have to do for our podcast to barely stay afloat in an impossible business environment, but for your country's birthday that's not a good sign as a country really I bet you he would stop in for like three seconds what

0:14:00 Lydia: A million dollars also would get you a private reception hosted by Trump with a historic photo opportunity yeah yeah I think that's true a liberty sponsor two and a half million dollars to under five million you were offered an actual speaking role at the event on the national mall yeah they're just auctioning off the entire celebration

0:14:18 Thomas: Oh my god now where's that money going to though is that just to make the party like that's the party fund maybe

0:14:26 Lydia: Make well it's interesting that you asked that so make the party yes but then there's also a report that came out from Wired that the event planning contracts that were in place when America 250 was leading the charge were canceled. And Trump brought in, wouldn't you know it, the same event planning firm that helped stage the Jan 6 rally and involved with RNC events, involved with the Trump campaign. This is really concerning. This feels really gross and corrupt. It's basically like what he was doing with the reflecting pool, right? Like he taps somebody that is a loyalist to him and gives him this opportunity to potentially just get a bunch of money from the government.

0:15:11 Lydia: Yeah. America 250 was supposed to have one hundred and fifty million dollars in appropriations.

0:15:09 Thomas: No bid contracts yeah the correct the normal one yeah

0:15:16 Lydia: Yeah, the normal one. And it had only received twenty five million dollars of that.

0:15:20 Thomas: Wait how because that would have happened

0:15:21 Lydia: They don't know. They held a congressional hearing to ask about this. And Democratic Representative Jared Huffman accused the Trump administration, quote, of using Freedom 250 to to hijack the country's 250th anniversary and sell access, hide his donors, and rewrite history. I

0:15:26 Thomas: Before well I guess sorry I guess I'm asking if there is a bill that appropriated money for the for the correct people why wouldn't that money have already gone out long before trump did this bullshit

0:15:46 Lydia: Think it must have to do with the schedule, maybe, for the appropriations for that funding. Because, again, that commission was established in 2016. Yeah, yeah, I don't know.

0:16:00 Thomas: But also how yeah but how would they even get in the middle of it like you you can't do that that's like the impoundment thing all over again wow

0:16:01 Lydia: And so that's why there was a congressional hearing about this. Adam Schiff sent that letter as well. And no one's saying anything. No one's seeing anything.

0:16:07 Thomas: God they just no one cares no one care about the most corruption in the history of

0:16:12 Lydia: U .S. embassies overseas were also apparently, and they have since come out and said that, no, these are celebrations within the embassy itself. But apparently they were hitting up overseas donors with what former diplomats described as aggressive as a fundraising push, trying to raise money. And Democrats are like, wait, wait. Is there foreign money coming in now to celebrate America's stuff on our land? And as I said, the embassies are saying, no, it's to celebrate in our respective locations.

0:16:27 Thomas: Humans oh that's too bad someone should make us another statue of liberty you know Like, well, actually they shouldn't, but like if we were a country that didn't suck. Yeah. Cause they should actually take ours away. They should repossess it. I think those, those Frenchmen, but it's funny that that happened. Like did countries used to do stuff, I guess like that. Maybe we were bored. They had nothing else to do.

0:16:44 Lydia: We don't deserve it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. The New York Times had a really smart point here. They looked at when they did the bicentennial, I guess, 1976, and they said President Richard M. Nixon was criticized for stacking the planning commission with political allies. This is from someone they interviewed about the bicenterial specifically. The bicenteriel had so many corporate partners that people began calling it the bicentariel, B -U -I. But Mr. Trump is taking things to new levels. Compared with Mr. Nixon, this expert in the Bicentennial said that Trump is politicizing the celebrations, quote, in a more overt way and with less pushback. Like people actually called out Nixon for like, hey, this seems kind of skeezy. What are you doing?

0:17:17 Thomas: And Nixon was by, nobody knows that, but he was actually totally by.

0:17:38 Lydia: And now it's just silent.

0:17:38 Thomas: Yeah we have lost our ability to care.

0:17:41 Lydia: I mean, Democrats are calling him out, but there's there's no consequence. There's nothing that can be done.

0:17:45 Thomas: Well, but if we use the right messaging I bet it would go through if we use the right

0:17:51 Lydia: Now, listeners may remember we talked about the Founders Museum that PragerU had put together for the White House. You remember that? The creepy AI videos? Yeah. Stuff of nightmares? Well, yes.

0:17:55 Thomas: Messaging oh god well plus like the unidentified is that was that no that was a different thing the unidentifiable like justice or founder that

0:18:10 Lydia: And also, facts don't care about your feelings, saying that one of the founders said that.

0:18:15 Thomas: Like oh my god really

0:18:15 Lydia: Yeah, we talked about it. It was like, I mean, it wasn't in that phrasing. It was, you know, like someone pretending to be early American and a little more polished, but it essentially was that. They're involved with this too as well. They partnered with Hillsdale College to design these things called Freedom Trucks. And so these are six mobile museums, which I don't mind that idea. A mobile museum, think that's great. However, it's been designed by Hillsdale and PragerU.

0:18:37 Thomas: I just fuck you you fucking 12 year olds yeah sure

0:18:51 Lydia: So I'm concerned about that. $10 million in taxpayer funds was moved to do this project, at least. That's what we know about so far. And the official that issued the grant over the agency that issued The Grant for this wrote in The Hill that the effort was, quote, part of a battle for the soul of our cultural institutions, that it was intended to reclaim American history from those intent on, quote, turning the less fortunate parts of American history into the entirety of the story itself.

0:18:50 Thomas: Yeah

0:19:20 Lydia: Can I tell you, and actually I'm going to send this to you one second. As part of this, these freedom trucks, there is an interactive loyalist or patriot quiz.

0:19:18 Thomas: Less fortunate oh my god what probably technically I don't really use it oh Oh yeah. I could, I could pull it up for that.

0:19:32 Lydia: Yeah. If you get loyalist, this is according to someone who who checked this out on Twitter. Do you have a Twitter account still? OK, because I can't see the second picture, so you're going to have to tell me. But this person who saw this posted about it on Twitter and said, if your answer leans loyalist, you are presented with a pair of pudgy, pale Brits. If your answer is lean patriot, you're a gun -wielding, stone -cold babe. Can you see the – I can see the Brits, but I can't see the stone -cold babe.

0:20:06 Thomas: Well what's, yeah. What's funny is the, the loyalist looks like a fat George Washington though. Like it, I don't know. What's that supposed to be? The other one it's, it's sort of like Heath Ledger-esque, but older. Yeah. It's very, very handsome. I can send you if you want. Sure.

0:20:25 Lydia: Why not?

0:20:26 Thomas: I want to see if I can be a patriot. Women want them men want to be

0:20:30 Lydia: Oh, yeah. Okay. I did see that in a still from another period of my research. So that's just what's been happening in the background. The organizations involved, right? Hillsdale, PragerU, we're talking about the event planning firm that was behind the rally for January 6th, which turned into the riot, which turned Into the insurrection.

0:20:50 Thomas: Them I'm imagining those people being like hey we planned a great party yeah things got out of hand but you gotta look at like when they're trying to get their next job we did january 6th you know but we did it was good the good part you know it was it was a very nice party before the other stuff yeah

0:21:06 Lydia: Yeah. Before it all happened. I don't know that they would. I know. Yeah, I don' t know. Know. I think that they're like, no, it was great. And we know that there was already an organization handling this and in a way that, again, is more comprehensive and thoughtful and seem to bring Americans together in a better way as opposed to something that is all about Trump. And I'm going to demonstrate that through a variety of moments that we had. First of all, the UFC fight. Originally, it Was planned for July 4th, the birthday of America. It was rescheduled to June 14th. And they said, oh, it's because of logistics. It's because of logistics, well, it was his 80th birthday.

0:21:44 Lydia: So and the way that it was celebrated.

0:21:44 Thomas: All right yeah logistically it was his 80th birthday. I don't know what you're saying. Why are you complaining?

0:21:50 Lydia: And after it was done, like most news outlets were like, this seemed to be celebrating Trump more than America, like this UFC fight that was supposed to be. It is it's a stupid thing.

0:21:58 Thomas: Yeah, duh. Well, but are you telling me this was supposed to be like the good party planners? I don't think they gave a shit. Okay. Yeah.

0:22:04 Lydia: No, no, no, it would still be for Freedom 250. But it was thought to be like, oh this would be a fun thing to do as part of the the semi -quincentennial initially, and then they rescheduled it because I guess Trump wanted it.

0:22:09 Thomas: Then I don't know. It was always this terrible, tacky idea.

0:22:18 Lydia: Oh, yeah. No, I agree. I agree, so, you know, the claw, the 90-foot arch built around the octagon, the fighters walking out from inside the White House, and some walked out from the Oval Office specifically. The United States Marine Band played all of their walkout music, and it was widely watched. I wonder how many people hate watched it.

0:22:38 Lydia: It was technically, based on my research, the most watched MMA event ever. 34 million people watched it.

0:22:43 Thomas: Wait, was it pay-per-view? Okay.

0:22:45 Lydia: I don't think so. And maybe that's part of why it was so widely watched.

0:22:48 Thomas: I mean, they have non-pay-per-view ones, I guess, but I haven't paid attention in a long time. So fuck that MAGA organization.

0:22:55 Lydia: Yeah, only 16%, however, of Americans thought it was appropriate to hold the event at the White House. Historians compared it to gladiatorial games in Imperial Rome, which obviously that's exactly the vibe it was giving. Yeah.

0:23:06 Thomas: I don't need a historian to even do that actually I could have done

0:23:11 Lydia: An anti -corruption group sued to block it obviously didn't work. That was honestly like the the first main event that happened. And obviously we're going to talk a lot about the Great American State Fair, but I wanted to briefly touch on the UFC thing.

0:23:17 Thomas: That I didn't even know that was part of the 250 I thought that was just he wanted to do a bullshit

0:23:24 Lydia: Yeah. Yeah, it was part of the 250 and then he just kind of co-opted it, wanted to do it for himself, which yeah, I'm with you. It shouldn't happen either way.

0:23:27 Thomas: Thing color me shocked yeah

0:23:34 Lydia: Now let's talk about the great American State Fair. This is a 16 day event on the National Mall. It's officially open, open June 25th. It'S running until July 10th.

0:23:43 Thomas: Good thing they got that water looking nice for it they got it all prepped

0:23:46 Lydia: Yeah you see that they just indicted an Olympian for that? Yeah, crazy.

0:23:49 Thomas: Oh god yeah they yeah we'll we'll talk about it

0:23:52 Lydia: I'm sure we'll talk about it on another show. But the idea behind this, the Great American State Fair, was that it was going to be a World's Fair -style celebration. There would be 150 -plus exhibits from all 56 states and territories, a giant Ferris wheel, a rodeo, concerts, flyovers, a once -in -a -generation celebration, in quotes. And it kicked off with stuff before it even opened, right? And we talked a little bit about this on Opening Arguments. But on May 27th, a concert series for this event was announced. And that same day, a bunch of artists were like, wait a second, and dropped out. So Martina McBride dropped out, Bret Michaels dropped out Young MC, The Commodores. Basically, we were left with Vanilla Ice and Flo Rida. And That Would Be It for these concerts. The backlash was so bad and so incredibly embarrassing that on June, or I guess by June 4th, I don't know exactly which day this happened, Trump canceled the concert series. And he said, it's not going to happen. And instead, we're just going to do a rally and I'll talk.

0:24:57 Lydia: And of course, Lee Greenwood would be there to sing and Christopher Macchio, an opera singer.

0:25:00 Thomas: What was the thing with vanilla no ice I thought he was the one guy that was like I'm in I'm oh okay

0:25:05 Lydia: Oh, we'll get to that. He comes back up in this story. Don't you worry. Don't you worry? It's still part of this.

0:25:07 Thomas: Oh okay that's a different thing sorry

0:25:10 Lydia: It's still part of this. Yeah. Now, so now, okay, we have, okay. The concert's scrapped. We're We're going to have this big rally instead to kick off the entire state fair. What did that look like? And Sean Duffy, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffey, comes out, takes the mic, and this is the first video I sent you. We're just going to listen to him and how he portrays, you know, how excited he is about pursuing the entertainment that they have now.

0:25:10 Thomas: I can't wait pursuing it okay hi there's like one guy what is this his family I

0:25:40 Clip: Okay, to start this off, I think we have to give a big round of applause for our military band and singers, way better than those libtards So much better, thank you guys.

0:25:46 Thomas: Guess oh for fuck's sake god you're so pathetic

0:25:57 Lydia: This is like the opening rally.

0:25:59 Clip: President Trump will make you famous. So I want to say what an incredible evening that we have this amazing event

0:26:02 Thomas: You're just so pathetic uh just yeah wow yeah

0:26:05 Lydia: Anyway, you can stop it there. Just needed that. I did not want to have to say those words. I wanted everybody to hear it from Sean Duffy himself. But that's how we're starting the opening rally for this thing that is supposed to be celebrating America. And it's so combative and gross and from a high -ranking member of the Trump administration. It's just unbelievable. Well, I say it's unbelievable. It's believable. I don't know why I'm saying it's unbelievable.

0:26:27 Thomas: Yeah, it's just such loser shit. God, they're such losers.

0:26:32 Lydia: Yeah, yeah. And you may have heard about this, too, that part of the opening rally was, you know, they were going to need somebody to sing the national anthem. Did you hear about this? Do you know who it is?

0:26:39 Thomas: I don't. Yeah.

0:26:44 Lydia: You probably heard about and forgot. Her name is Alexis Wilkins, and she's Kash Patel's girlfriend. So there you go. That's who's singing the national anthem to start the Great American State Fair. Kick it all off. Kash Patil, director of the FBI. His 27 -year -old girlfriend is coming over. And, you know, she's fine. I listened to it, and I was like, I don't really need to make fun of her, I guess. I don'T want to spend a lot of time on this because, first of all, we've all heard the national anthem a million times. We get it.

0:27:12 Thomas: I don't know. Have I heard that?

0:27:14 Lydia: And also, like I said, she's fine. She's, you know, a country singer.

0:27:20 Thomas: What's happening? Isn't slow motion or. Oh, boy.

0:27:31 Clip: Oh, what can you see by the dawn's early light?

0:27:36 Thomas: And a low voice, huh?

0:27:39 Lydia: Yeah. Actually skip towards the end, like the big money note stuff.

0:27:44 Clip: What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

0:28:08 Thomas: Wow.

0:28:19 Lydia: Okay.

0:28:21 Thomas: That's the most normal thing that's happened in this entire.

0:28:24 Lydia: Yeah, that's what I'm saying. She is fine. Whatever. She has been singing since like 2020. I'm sure she's been singing longer than that, but her career specifically 2020, she released an EP. She She has a concert schedule that's upcoming if anyone wants to check her out. It's a gig at a Chicago restaurant in July. So if anyone want to go check out Alexis Wilkins, let me know. I'll send you the link. But everybody was like, wait, why is this happening? First of all, we can barely hear her. Like the sound, a lot of people call that out. Like the sounds sounds terrible. One person on X asked, is the FBI director's girlfriend really the best they could get for our 250th opening celebration? There are plenty of conservative country stars who would have done this, actually. Like, there's a lot. So why? Why is it Alexis Wilkins? I think there are.

0:29:13 Thomas: I don't know yeah that's

0:29:16 Lydia: I mean, they could have even just asked Lee Greenwood. He's there already. Like, just have him sing that.

0:29:18 Thomas: True he's the he's the marco rubio of the trump's like music stuff though like he can only do so much he's like a one -man band he's got like all this shit

0:29:25 Lydia: Yeah, true. Someone asked if this violated federal ethics laws for Kash Patel because, you know, it's his girlfriend. So she responded, I imagine, primarily based off of something like that and just being questioned about her as a singer anyway. She says, you Know, she's been a country music artist for years she was not accepting payment at all that the accusations were quote total sham accusations diminishing her hard work and earned accomplishments so anyway yeah just

0:29:33 Thomas: On him uh -huh yeah just pure coincidence huh what are the

0:30:02 Lydia: Pure coincidence let's listen to a little bit of Trump's speech from this kickoff too and then we'll talk about the fair

0:30:03 Ad: [Ad break 2 — ad music]

0:30:07 Clip: Well, thank you, Lee, and hello, Washington, and a very big hello to America. And 10 days from now, our country will celebrate one of the most monumental milestones in human We will mark 250 years of glorious American freedom. In 1776, our founding fathers met in Philadelphia and changed the world forever and ever with a thing called the Declaration of Independence.

0:30:10 Thomas: Odds well there's

0:30:34 Lydia: Itself I just wish like he could be a comedy character

0:30:43 Thomas: Lee uh so funny yeah well he is

0:30:45 Clip: They proclaimed the eternal truth that we are endowed by our Creator with the rights rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We all made, and you know that, free and equal by the hand of Almighty God. Those timeless American principles did not just win a revolution, but they built us into

0:31:06 Thomas: I love the hand of almighty god

0:31:12 Clip: The greatest, strongest, and most exceptional nation the world has ever known, there has never been anything like the United States of America, and together we are making it bigger and better and stronger and far more exceptional than ever before. Today we have the largest economy on Earth. We have the strongest military on Earth, we have the most powerful technology on earth, we have the greatest culture on earth and above all we have, the greatest people on earth. Greatest. Tonight as we stand on

0:31:28 Thomas: Whatever else dumb bullshit that absolutely not sure Don't

0:32:00 Clip: The edge of our 250th year of independence, I am thrilled to declare that America is back.

0:32:10 Thomas: I feel like he's declared that a lot of

0:32:13 Lydia: All A lot of times. Yes. So the next day, the fair opens. Gates were supposed to open at a specific time. They didn't. Yeah. So 30 minutes after they were meant to open, there were still people waiting outside. They were dealing with power outages and there were still construction materials out. So they were, it's like me before the kids' birthday parties is what was happening. Like let them in and help, let them help you finish setting up is kind of what the situation was.

0:32:17 Thomas: Times oh wow really oh yeah yeah yeah you don't want to come early to america's

0:32:43 Lydia: Apparently not. And once visitors got in, like I said, the New Republic characterizing it as something that Wile E. Coyote would run into while chasing the Roadrunner. The Washington Post said it was, quote, strangely short on nostalgia, long on defense contractors and Fox and Friends. The New York Times said, you know, like it doesn't have these traditional state fair elements, but it does have displays promoting Turning Point USA, of course. So uh like

0:33:06 Thomas: 250th yeah but it does have the typical people you see at a state

0:33:13 Lydia: Five of them and yeah Jim

0:33:13 Thomas: Fair oh yeah true to the extent there were people

0:33:17 Lydia: Acosta does a little tour if uh let's check that out so we can kind of see and you can describe the visuals he does a pretty good job describing it too but

0:33:19 Thomas: Yeah oh wow okay I'm excited about this It's just an empty field.

0:33:26 Clip: Well here we are in the national mall checking out the great american state fair donald trump's version of america's 250th birthday here in the nation's capital and if you're looking for a place with really no lines whatsoever then you better come down to the mall there's even a miniature version of donald Trump's arch isn't that cute look at that little thing right there yeah as you can see no line to get in it's one o'clock in the afternoon we're on the national mall it's probably the nicest weather of the week and there are no lines to get hardly anybody in line surely there must be a long line for the ferris wheel it's the big attraction down here let's take a look

0:34:10 Thomas: Nothing. Just a little bit of people

0:34:12 Lydia: Yeah yeah empty

0:34:12 Clip: Oh boy yeah it's about one o'clock in the afternoon it's about lunch time I'm a little parched could use a burger or something I hope there's not a long line in here. This is the arch that they put down on the National Mall.

0:34:19 Lydia: Space so

0:34:17 Thomas: Is in a tent kind of thing. Oh,

0:34:29 Clip: There's a huge gap. I mean, this is a pretty good example of the shoddy construction down here. Look at these gaps in between these faux columns and one of the main pavilions down here and the actual ground. It's like two or three feet. But Trump is everywhere, like inside this Agriculture Department booth.

0:34:39 Thomas: My God, it's so tacky. God, this is tacky

0:34:39 Lydia: Bad

0:34:49 Clip: You can also sign up for Trump's savings accounts in the Treasury Department booth And where would the Great American State Fair be without their own propagandists? Yes, there they are. There's Fox News doing their programming from down here on the National Mall, probably telling everybody what a massive celebration there is going on down here. The fossil fuel industry seems to have their own little talk that's going on. They're doing like a panel discussion, and there's nobody listening, just a few people.

0:34:54 Thomas: Trump accounts.gov. Oh, my God

0:35:23 Lydia: So embarrassing

0:35:25 Clip: Well, in one of these pavilions, I found a sweeping exhibit that can only be described as an ode to the religious right. Here we have our great nation that we want to make great again.

0:35:40 Thomas: That's awesome. That last thing, There was like some sort of like, you know, old founder, like reenactor in a costume and stuff. Like, God, it's so tacky. That's a great video.

0:35:49 Lydia: Yeah, um the arch also some people commented that it looked like there were sheets draped over it, like white sheets to try and make the color more uniform and like stapled on. It's so bad. It's just the most ridiculous looking thing. I mentioned, you know, that the idea was that 56 states and territories, all 56 states and territories would be participating as part of the state fair and they would all have booths. So let's talk about what that looked like.

0:36:18 Lydia: Well, a bunch of states said, we're not sending anybody. Some said it was going to be too expensive. Some states said, we don't want to be associated with this.

0:36:26 Thomas: Some states respond with, oh, when was the day? Oh. I think. Oh, my aunt is. Yeah.

0:36:29 Lydia: Yeah. Oh, shoot. Got lost in the mail. Yeah. So Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Illinois, they all opted out. So instead of those just not being booths as part of this fair, they were instead repurposed by Freedom 250 volunteers, and they staffed them themselves. So in Hawaii, Freedom 250 volunteers put up a mural of Barack Obama, And then there was a tourist that randomly was greeting visitors there and he just like stole one of the passport stampers that they were doing, you know, like go collect all your stamps from all the different booths. And he just went on a rant about the tourism authority. Not like I don't know, weirdos.

0:36:39 Thomas: This weekend. Wait, what is this? Sorry. Is that the actual. Did you say.

0:37:16 Lydia: This is just a tourist that co-opted because the Hawaii booth was empty. He just like stepped in.

0:37:19 Thomas: Oh, I'm sorry. I got you. Okay. Okay, so wait, even though the states said no, they still had the booths? Oh, my God. Why would you do that?

0:37:24 Lydia: The state said no. And they still held the booths? Yes. Yeah. And it was just very different depending on which state it was to like there was no standard sort of approach to this. Maine's booth was empty with some chairs and lobster facts on the wall. Like, just facts about lobster on their wall because Maine didn't show up. So that's what Freedom 250 decided to put in there.

0:37:48 Thomas: These people are so dumb.

0:37:50 Lydia: Yeah. The New Republic said in the space that Connecticut and Maine were sharing the booths that again both of those states opted out said it quote looked like the waiting room of a pediatrician's office.

0:38:04 Lydia: South Carolina did participate and even it was described as quote totally sterile and Hawaii and Alaska had no one attending to visitors at all the second day just kind of staying on our state booth topic a reporter was visiting the North Carolina booth North Carolina had opted out so it was put together by Freedom 250 volunteers and they noticed that the screens were playing a video that included the Confederate flag yep North Carolina had zero involvement in this whatsoever video spread everywhere and I don't know if it was malicious or not. But all the North Carolina reporting I had seen from it, you know, like journalists and stuff, they're like, no version of the North Carolina flag has ever looked close to this. Just trying to reiterate, like, there's no way that this was an accident. When it got called out, when it spread everywhere, they did remove it. The people who were responsible for organizing it, the governor issued a statement, Josh Stein, saying that the flag, quote, does not represent the North Carolina that we love. And Mount Olive Pickle Company, which was a corporate The corporate sponsor of the booth, of the North Carolina booth, withdrew from sponsoring entirely. They said, we're not going to be involved with this anymore. They said, quote, we were unaware that an image of the Confederate flag was included. Our company stands on values of human dignity, opportunity, and freedom. Now, I thought it would be good to hear from, you know, I'm not there. I haven't visited. I'm collating all this stuff from other people's experiences.

0:39:22 Thomas: We wish we could go.

0:39:23 Lydia: Yeah, I I thought it would be fun to hear from some people who are actually there. And someone went around and got some feedback.

0:39:32 Thomas: Jeff, watch it. It's International Jeff. It's National Jeff.

0:39:36 Clip: I've been to state fairs all throughout the United States.

0:39:43 Thomas: Just look at it.

0:39:44 Clip: It's a program-length advertisement for the president. It's interesting. It's very interesting. I've never seen anything like this before, for sure, in my 27 years of living in Virginia and living near the D.C. area. And does anything jump out at you? It's not a state fair without animals. There's a butter cow, I'm told, at least in the Iowa booth, maybe. I'm totally underwhelmed. That arch over there is, I think, promoting one of Trump's vanity projects. Projects. I compare this to the Smithsonian Folklife Festival that they do every year, which is wonderful. It really, you know, talks about different cultures and countries. This is so bland, but I had to come down and see it.

0:40:37 Thomas: Fantastic. Really?

0:40:38 Lydia: To be fair, there were some positive comments I found, too. Quote, there's not a weed in this grass, Jack said. I don't know if anybody's noticed that, but that takes some doing. If the administration can do that well, they can do a lot of stuff well. Oh, my God. OK, so now we know the setup. We know the background.

0:40:49 Thomas: Yeah, totally. Just see how they handle this body of water that they fucking ruined.

0:40:57 Thomas: If this administration, the best you could do is like lawn care. That's the best, that's how, that's, well, they could take care of a lawn. So that must mean they're great with the budget and the tariffs and war and yeah.

0:41:12 Lydia: Yeah. Governance. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So how many people were at this freaking thing?

0:41:18 Thomas: Well, what's the bounds of that? When is it? Or like, you know what I mean like to say add it like is it still going or okay

0:41:24 Lydia: Oh, it is still going. Yeah, so it's, you know, you would think that a lot of people come around opening day, right? June 25th. School's not in session.

0:41:27 Thomas: Yeah, you think I'm surprised? I'm actually surprised that there's not more like I don't know kids that were forced to go or something you

0:41:36 Lydia: Yeah I have seen some pictures of kids that are forced to go and some people that have like road tripped there and stuff that did seem excited about it because they're, you know, MAGA.

0:41:39 Thomas: Know okay good fucking Insane, yeah

0:41:47 Lydia: That's really what it is, is that they're MAGA and they want the chance to see Trump in person. But the Washington Post said that opening day crowds were, quote, relatively sparse compared with past national mall events, that they, quote finley covered an area about the length of the National Museum of American History smaller than some summer outdoor movie screenings. Yeah. The New Republic reported that there were dozens of attendees leaving in the middle of his opening speech for this. NBC News said that about half of the crowd that did show up were wearing Trump merchandise, obviously, and that from their perspective, the state fair premise didn't really matter. It's just that they were there to see Trump, right?

0:42:02 Thomas: Oh, my

0:42:25 Lydia: Dean Cain tried to put this in a way that is just incredible where he said, there's tons of people here. It'S a huge space and it's just going to get more and more crowded as the week goes on. I don't know who was filming this, but the camera pans to the fairground, which is mostly empty. So brilliant filmmaking, whoever was responsible for that. Fox News, Peter Doocy did a live shot as part of this as well, too. Looking out at the crowd, he says, it's really something, the weather, not the best today, day, but people are still coming out and there's nobody there. So obviously you're going to make fun of Trump crowd size. He's going to, yeah,

0:42:25 Thomas: God lie about

0:42:59 Lydia: He's going chirp back. He posted on Truth Social the next morning as all of these reports were coming out following the opening day saying, quote, the crowd was incredible last night, packed to the brim. At least 45 ,000 people were there. NBC News responded to that and said, it's nowhere near that, nowhere near, in quotes. CNN published published a piece that they headlined, again, Trump said nobody left his speech. Again, that wasn't true.

0:43:01 Thomas: It hmm yeah oh okay

0:43:24 Lydia: And then Trump responded again on Monday morning following that at 6:27 in the morning. Quote, do you think people appreciate what a fantastic job we did in building and operating the Great American State Fair at the National Mall, packed with happy people and everybody loving it? Ask yourself the simple question, and in all caps, do YOU think that Obama or sleepy Joe Biden could have done it? The answer is no. Yeah. And honestly, I'm glad, first of all, nobody should be going to this thing because it's stupid. Waste of time, waste of money, waste of energy, waste resources, et cetera, etetera. It's obviously just to fan Trump's ego. So let it fall flat on its face. But additionally, for safety reasons, I'm Glad People Aren't There. I mentioned that they were having power outages and it was delaying them from opening the gates and letting people in on time on the first day. They continue to to have electrical failures and they're describing them as power hiccups. But the Ferris wheel continues to break down over and over and again. The food hall is losing power. All the ice cream that's available in the food hall are melting. West Virginia's booth lost air conditioning and had to shut down entirely. People who are there are trying to find shade because this is a crazy heat wave that D .C. is experiencing. And the only real shade on the entire National Mall that was set up for people is that stupid arch, that little miniature arch that he made. That's it. Isn't that crazy? And an event planning firm was behind this. I wouldn't say that they were good, but they described themselves as an event -planning firm. Yeah.

0:43:22 Thomas: Okay yeah yeah oh no oh no oh Yeah, yeah, God, this is it's impossible it's a it's impossible yeah they're like we just design riots I don't know this is not they're not supposed to write how how do you how do YOU design an event like that that doesn't make any

0:45:05 Lydia: It's like one of the most basic things is there's nowhere for people to sit down at all, So people are just standing up and eating. These are fundamentals of event planning. Anybody could figure this out. You need places for people to be able to sit down. You need spaces for people to, yeah, yeah. And it was January last time we did this. We weren't worried about the heat. It's just so crazy. And then physically things are falling apart. So as we saw in that video, and I'll link that for folks too so they can check it out. Everything is done in a very shoddy way. All the craftsmanship is very shody. The construction of materials is shodgy. They described themselves as a rain or shine event. And then they evacuated people out when they expected thunderstorms. And someone had driven two hours away and they said, where are we supposed to go?

0:45:09 Thomas: Well, you don't sit down during a riot. I don't what God. Yeah. Yeah.

0:45:51 Lydia: Like, do I just go sit in my car? I drove here. I drove two hours. Do I drive home now? And they said quote, it's kind of sad there's not a backup plan. Yeah, again, another thing that's such a fundamental piece of event planning. And then when they had to close again on last Sunday because of extreme heat, they posted the closure that, you know, organizers posted the closer announcement on a digital billboard and they told attendees to, you know, keep an eye on the social media channels of their organization, but they misspelled it. Three E's. F -R -E -EE -D -O -M -250. Amazing. So just like every little piece, there's like little tiny pieces that are just hilarious and the most foolish things ever. And then there's like big, important things that actually could lead to the health and safety of attendees, which is a problem.

0:46:44 Ad: [Ad break 3 — ad music]

0:46:45 Lydia: Now, I have to also just share this little nugget before I get to, I think, the Vanilla Ice of it all.

0:46:52 Thomas: Hurry. Running out of time. I'm running out of ice time.

0:46:55 Lydia: I'm going to close this out. But they have said that Mondays during this time for the State Fair, so again, it's from June 25th to July 10th. So the Mondays are Maha Mondays. And they had their first Maha Monday. And I'm not going to say anything. I'm just going to send it to you. You know, they're theming this around health and wellness on their Mondays, and this is how they kicked it off for the first Macha Monday.

0:47:13 Thomas: Did they do the song that I just tried to do? Yeah. I thought you were going to latch on.

0:47:20 Lydia: No, they should have. I would have liked them more.

0:47:24 Clip: And this morning, four younger Americans put their stomachs to the test with a pancake eating contest. That's tough on any day, let alone in this kind of heat. The winner was determined by audience applause. The guy who won appeared really worried he wasn't going to be able to keep the pancakes down but in the end he made it there's no cows there's

0:47:33 Thomas: Like whoever didn't die. Oh God. Oh wow.

0:47:38 Lydia: Okay. Isn't that crazy? Make America healthy again. And the way we're going to kick it off is by making people stuff their faces with pancakes as fast as they can. They would also give bonus points whoever could eat them the funniest. Yeah.

0:47:43 Thomas: Wow. What you don't, what you don'T understand is that at some point an expert said hey it might not be good to eat like that much of this particular thing anything that's considered like a classic like a pancake my grandpa eat pancake that then they have to revenge of these idiots is like no do more of that even more pancakes they're so good because somebody who I don't you know is an expert told me not to eat so many things so we have that means you gotta eat more they're just a kid with oppositional defiance disorder that's the entire fucking thing god thank

0:48:22 Lydia: Yeah. Yeah. And as Fox News was covering it, they said, today the focus is on making America healthier again. Just amazing. All right. Now Vanilla Ice. I promised we would get to it. Yes. So Vanilla Ice, he was supposed to headline Friday night, June 26, and it was going to be a 90s triple bill with Young MC, Milli Vanilli, and CNC Music Factory. But all of those groups vowed out that Vanilla Ice was going to be the only person. Yeah. Yeah. He spent the entire day filming hype videos of him on the mall. He did a panoramic shot with the Washington Monument. He said, quote, we're about to have a great party tonight. This is going to Be Epic. We're all going to come together and be teenagers for the night. He went on the Ingram Angle on Fox News and said that it was a huge honor to come here and play this event. He was just so excited, so pumped, everything. And then two hours before he was supposed to go on stage, Freedom 250 posted on X, due to inclement weather in the area, they will be closed for the rest of the day.

0:48:33 Thomas: You god I bet Vanilla Ice was so happy he's like Oh, My God, I'm gonna be the fucking star of this show oh my God no oh boy

0:49:21 Lydia: Again, their own website says rain or shine. Vanilla Ice is there. It looked real sunny. The forecast said, according to NBC4 out in D .C., tonight a few evening storms, not everybody sees rain tonight. And that the meteorologist said, really not having any concern for severe weather.

0:49:36 Thomas: Oh, was it just, you said Vanilla Ice is there but was it like he looked out and there's three people he's like fuck that yeah yeah

0:49:41 Lydia: I think that could be what it is, is that because the crowds were so bad, they didn't want footage of him performing to nobody there.

0:49:47 Thomas: No way I'm sure even not even vanilla ice would want to do that I don't

0:49:51 Lydia: I don't know. He was so excited, but he was not rescheduled.

0:49:54 Thomas: Yeah but he's an idiot he probably thought there was going to be people

0:49:55 Lydia: Yeah. Yeah, that's true. That's true, but there was no measurable rainfall at all during the hours that the concert was supposed to happen. He was not Rescheduled the US Army Jazz Band took a slot for the next day. And yeah, and I think That it probably is that they were worried about what it was going to look like when Vanilla Ice was performing to 10 people. So there you have it.

0:50:13 Thomas: There yeah it would look so much worse than his normal 11

0:50:19 Lydia: Yeah, I know. I know So we have a group a public -private partnership that's siphoning millions of dollars from a bipartisan Congressionally approved commission that has been planning this for a decade We have the stupid UFC fight in honor of Trump's 80th birthday We have little concert lineup that fell apart within hours. We have yeah No, no Lee

0:50:22 Thomas: People happy birthday god wow so they had no concert then other than the bat the whatever

0:50:43 Lydia: Greenwood and Christopher Macchio the opera singer and Alexis Cash Patel's girlfriend.

0:50:48 Thomas: Oh god it's so good I love lee greenwood that he'll still he'll still he's

0:50:50 Lydia: Yeah Yeah, he'll be there. He'll be there, you know.

0:50:52 Thomas: The marco rubio like all right I guess I'm also the ambassador to France or something oh

0:50:56 Lydia: Yeah. Yeah. States didn't show up. There was a Confederate flag. A pickle company said that they weren't going to be involved anymore. Like, it's just incredible.
